Welcome!

These monthly newsletters (from January 2011 to present) are to help us all be more prepared. They are written for the Hurricane Utah Stake (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,) but everyone is welcome to make copies. Many other groups and individuals are using them. (Note: Garden tips are for Southern Utah. You may need to adjust to fit your climate.)

The Merry Month of May is upon us! This is a wonderful time of year. The gardens are growing, the flowers have bloomed, and the weather is pleasant! It is a time to look forward to the harvest as we work in the garden – and - we are still beating the war of the weeds! It is a time of hopefulness and dreams of a summer season full of fun and relaxation! And – just like all good hopes and dreams – there must be a plan. We could not plant a garden or go on a vacation without a plan. And we cannot be prepared without a plan either. Now is a great time to take stock of where we are in our preparedness – and make a plan for our summer months to add to that preparedness status. Just like the tortoise won the race with a “slow and steady” pace – we can keep adding faithfully and consistently to our storage and preparedness until we realize we are only maintaining -  and what once seemed difficult was really an easy task after all!

Included in this months newsletter:
Five Principles of Preparedness: basic principles to keep us and our family safe in times of troubles. They are a "living Insurance". 1. Practice thrift and frugality. 2. Seek to be independent. 3. Become industrious. 4. Strive towards self reliance. 5. Aspire to have a yer's supply of every needful thing.  (Includes a link for a free Preparedness Manual.)
In the Southern Utah Garden: Planting almost everything, weeds, fruit spray, flowering shrubs, feritlizer, roundup and 2-4-D, water wise.
Cooking with Food Storage: recipes for Strawberry Jam and Frozen Strawberries.
Summertime and the canning is easy:  a list of equipment to have for home canning.
